Tailored Catalysts Show Promising Performance for Sensor Applications

As part of our ongoing work on advanced functional materials, we are developing tailored metal particle systems for contaminant detection and attractive applications such as electrochemical sensors. The most effective approaches today rely on nanostructured metals—especially bimetallic nanoparticles.

These materials have recently been successfully fabricated at C2CAT and tested in collaboration with VITO (Belgium). The electrochemical measurements, shown in the figure, demonstrate a clear and concentration-dependent response of the catalysts toward the target analyte. The variation in current response across different analyte concentrations highlights the sensitivity and tunability of the developed materials.

The results confirm that our bimetallic nanoparticle systems offer strong potential for selective and reliable sensing applications, with opportunities for further optimisation in terms of stability, detection limits, and real-world deployment.

This collaboration represents an important step toward translating advanced catalyst design into practical sensor technologies.
